This story is about Sprout a self-named hen that wants to fly, wants
to hatch egg. But one day when she no
longer lays eggs the farmer tries to kill the hen but she escapes. But there is
a weasel following hen to kill. One day the hen finds an egg and she hatches
the egg later finds the egg belongs to a duck. The hen tries to protect the chick from weasel
and tries to find a shelter. Later the chick transforms into a wild duck and
wants to go back to its flock. As the time passes the hen becomes old and falls
prey to the weasel.
I am not sure how I got hold of this while randomly ordering on
Amazon, and I finished reading in one sitting. Later I searched net and found
about the author who is from South Korea and a professor by profession she is
widely known for this fable which is also made into an animated film.
This book really lasted its impact for quite long after reading as
well. For I started thinking about the way the hen thinks about getting away
from the routine and starts dreaming. Later despites its strength tries to
fight weasel to protect the chick. The commendable effort I feel is from the
translator, as I found the emotions at various levels in the book are really
put forward effectively.
